Our Library flourishes because of an inspiring history of support by Miami Shores residents. Brockway Memorial Library owes its very existence to the generosity of two early villagers, Roy H. Hawkins, then General Manager of Bessemer Properties, and George A. Brockway —who donated the land on which the library stands and the funds to build the library, respectively. The initial collection consisted of 4,182 volumes of books donated by residents and civic organizations.
Over the years, in response to the demands of a growing community and an ever expanding collection, additions to the building were made in 1955, 1960, 1984, and in 2002, which together tripled the dimension of the Children’s Room, workrooms and stacks, as well as created a Media Center, meeting room, and space for the Miami Shores Archives. Another expansion was completed in 2023, which created an additional 1,200 sq. ft. of programming space on the north side of the building, adjacent to the Children’s Room. The project included a new office for the Youth Services Department and a new family restroom. These improvements would not have been possible without the financial support of many generous members of the community and grants from local organizations. Today, over 68,000 books and audio-visual materials, as well as computers, are housed in a pleasant, safe, accessible, and well-maintained building. Ongoing activities include a variety of children’s and adult programs, seasonal celebrations, art exhibits, book clubs, workshops, and special guest presentations.
