Job Description:

Under the supervision of the Recreation Manager, Summer Camp Counselors are responsible for supervising and engaging children participating in the Village’s summer camp program.  Counselors engage in activities such as field trips, games, swimming, arts and craft while ensuring the safety, well-being, and positive experience of all campers.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:      

  • Assists with daily camp activities including sports, arts and craft, games, swimming, filed trips, and educational programs.
  • Supervises and ensures safety of campers.
  • Participates in age-appropriate programming of games and activities for children.
  • Promotes positive behavior and encourages teamwork, inclusion, and respect among campers.
  • Assists with organizing and setting up / breaking down program activities and equipment.
  • Maintains attendance records and monitors campers during transitions and activities.
  • Ensures camp areas, equipment, and supplies are maintained in a safe and orderly condition.
  • Enforces camp rules and safety procedures.
  • Assists with special events, theme days, and group activities.
  • Communicates effectively with supervisor and parents when appropriate.
  • Assists with light maintenance duties, ensuring a safe play environment.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:

  • Must be at least 17 years old or older.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment drug screening and level II background screening.
  • Experience working with children in a camp, school, childcare, recreation, or youth program environment preferred.
  • Must be competent swimmer and comfortable supervisor children in water.
  • Valid State of Florida Driver’s License

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Knowledge of traditional athletic games;
  • Ability to supervise groups of children in an active outdoor environment.
  • Ability to lead and participate in recreational activities.
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing to staff and program participants;
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse age groups and backgrounds;
  • Basic knowledge of recreational activities and safety practices;
  • Knowledge of safety protocols and guidelines;
  • Strong interpersonal and oral communication skills;
  • Good customer service and organizational skills;
  • Flexibility and ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Summer Camp Counselors typically work in dynamic environments, including indoor and outdoor settings and be exposed to various weather conditions.  Physical ability to lift equipment and participate in activities as needed.  May operate a motor vehicle occasionally.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:     

Work is performed indoors and outdoors at parks, recreational facilities, pools, and field trip locations. The position requires active engagement with children and participation in recreational activities. Must be available Monday – Friday 8:00 am – 5:30 pm depending on program schedules. Work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices or meeting and training rooms, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire and building safety regulations.
